Expand Healthcare Access Across the City

- The pandemic exposed that there are not enough hospitals in high-need areas, especially in poorer areas that were hit the hardest by COVID-19. There are 11 public hospitals in a city of 8.7 million people. Nearly 7% of the population in NYC does not have health insurance. While there has been an expansion in New York City Health + Hospitals to provide primary care to all people regardless of insurance or legal status, it is still not enough to combat decades of underfunding. Closing public hospitals has created unequal access to health care. In addition to not having care nearby, most families cannot afford to get sick because they do not have health insurance. Insurance companies serve no other purpose than being the middleman between doctors and patients while charging unnecessary premiums.
- Fully fund public hospitals and open new public hospitals in neighborhoods with lower adjusted gross incomes and areas hit hard by the pandemic.
- Invest in and expand NYC Health + Hospitals providing free and affordable primary and preventative care to vulnerable and at-risk populations.
- Invest in public health awareness campaigns.
